AQA Unit

The Unit Award Scheme records achievement and gives a student recognition for completing short units of work. The scheme was established in 1984 and is administered by AQA (an educational charity) the leading provider of GCSEs and A-levels used in most secondary schools and colleges in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The scheme is approved by the former DfEE (Department for Education and Employment) for recording achievement in all non-qualification contexts. The scheme engages, motivates, raises self esteem and rewards achievement which might otherwise go unrecognised. In addition to schools many different organisations use the scheme. Schools and centres are carefully vetted by AQA and an assessor is assigned to each registered centre to monitor the scheme. All units are validated to ensure they provide a clear, coherent unit of work.

The Units - There are thousands of units already validated and available to use with students. Activities, resources and materials need to be developed so that the student can meet the requirements of the unit and provide evidence of the outcomes to be accredited.

'Talk Out Loud; a Mental Health Awareness' resource - 4 lessons

3activeuk partner Val Payne is an AQA Unit Award Scheme Centre Co-ordinator for a local school and has facilitated the validation of a unit to accredit the work undertaken during the 4 lessons in the 'Talk Out Loud; a Mental Health Awareness' resource. Schools already registered as a centre for the AQA Unit Award Scheme will be able to use the validated unit with identified students and moderate through their existing systems. Schools wanting to use the scheme but are not registered as an AQA Unit Award centre can either decide to register or use 3activeuk to facilitate the moderation of this specific unit. Schools wishing to use the Unit Award Scheme should contact Val Payne (see contact details below) to obtain a copy of the Student Worksheet, Teacher Checklist , AQA Summary Sheet and guidance on the use of these when assessing students.
