Understanding depression

From time to time, all of us can feel down, tired, stressed, overwhelmed or upset for any number of reasons. It is normal for us to experience all sorts of emotions and react to situations in different ways. Although we may feel down for a few days or even weeks, most of us are lucky enough to see light at the end of the tunnel or have something good to look forward to.

For people suffering from depression it is easy to never see a way out of the emotions they are feeling even though they may have a bright future ahead of them.

I recently came across a video which described depression using the metaphor of a dog. It helped me to understand depression and how it makes someone to feel. So whether you suffer from depression, know someone who does, whether you want to know more about depression or you’ve never heard of it then I would recommend watching this short video.

The video describes how depression changes a sufferer’s viewpoint, the activities they enjoy as well as the way they think. It tests their strength and takes away their confidence. The video also describes how depression makes the person feel ashamed and worried that people would find out about their problems as a result of the stigma.

By understanding and learning about mental health illnesses we can help those who need it and break down the stigma.

Now that we are in 2014, it is shocking that the stigma of mental health still exists but by us aiming to stamp out the stigma and educate people about mental health issues hopefully this year we will see a shift in attitudes no matter how small.

So here is a challenge. To those of you reading this blog, I propose that you to add one new years resolution to your list and that is to talk out loud about mental health issues and continue to challenge and stamp out stigma wherever you see it.
